Maria Sharapova came from a set down to defeat Britain's Heather Watson in the first round of the US Open.
The American came through 3-6 7-5 6-3 after two hours and 34 minutes on the Arthur Ashe showcourt.
Watson, 19, was making her first appearance in the main draw at Flushing Meadows, having won the junior title in 2009.
Fourth seed Sharapova, ranked 100 places higher than Watson, made many errors during the tie but her raw power pulled her through in the end.
The 24-year-old will now face either Anastasiya Yakimova or Noppawan Lertcheewakarn in round two.
Elsewhere, fellow young Brit Laura Robson did make it through to the second round.
