Heather Watson has recorded a three-set victory over Chang Liu to reach the second qualifying round of the Wuhan Open.
The British number two was playing her first match since losing in the first round of the US Open, and her lack of form showed as she struggled at times against the Chinese wildcard, who is ranked 219 in the world.
Watson breezed through the opening set but she was bageled in the second as her opponent threatened a shock win.
However, two breaks of serve in the decider were enough for Watson to eventually come through by a 6-1 0-6 6-4 scoreline.
Watson will play American Samantha Crawford in the second of three qualifying rounds at the big-money tournament in Asia.
