Janko Tipsarevic will meet Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open after a three-sets victory over Gilles Simon.

After both players held serve in the opening set, world number eight Tipsarevic dominated in the tie-break to take it 7-3.

Simon drew on all of his defensive strengths in the second as the world number 15 snatched a break off the Serbian to claim the set 7-5.

While the Belgian had done well to get himself back in the match it was to little avail as Tipsarevic stormed to a 6-1 win in the deciding set.
