French number one Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has been knocked out of the Rome Masters by Jerzy Janowicz, who recorded a 6-4 7-6 victory in the Italian capital this afternoon.
World number eight Tsonga was regarded as the strong favourite to advance from this match, but he made a string of unforced errors that allowed his Polish opponent to break and claim the opening set.
There was nothing to split the pair during the second set though, and a tie-breaker was required to determine a victor.
Tsonga broke early, but Janowicz responded late on by winning three points in succession to take the breaker 7-5.
He will take on another Frenchman, Richard Gasquet, in round three.
