Heather Watson has suffered a straight-sets defeat to Kateryna Bondarenko in the final qualifying round for the China Open.
The 23-year-old, who will lose her status as British number one on Monday, had been looking to qualify for her second high-profile tournament event in the space of a week after winning two matches to make it through to the Wuhan Open last week.
However, Watson struggled with her serve against the world number 82 as she landed just 32% of her first serves during the opening set, which saw the Guernsey hitter broken on two occasions.
Watson's delivery improved during the second, but the Ukrainian struck two more times to run out a 6-3 6-4 winner.
