Heather Watson's disappointing year continued in Osaka as she was beaten 6-4 6-4 by Monica Puig in the first round of the HP Open.
The British number two has now lost 19 of her last 30 singles matches.
Eighth seed Puig took the first set by two breaks to one, but Watson stormed out of the blocks in the second, racing into a 3-0 lead.
However, the 21-year-old then capitulated, losing five games on the spin before finally succumbing to defeat inside 94 minutes.
