Stanislas Wawrinka reached round two of the Madrid Masters thanks to a 6-4 6-4 win over Marius Copil this afternoon.
The Swiss number two took command of the first set early on by claiming a break of his Romanian opponent's serve. Both players then went on to hold their respective service games, which allowed Wawrinka to open up a one-set advantage.
It was a similar outcome in the second set, although it took world number 15 Wawrinka until the ninth game to make the breakthrough. He then held his next service game to advance through to the next round.
He will now face either Santiago Giraldo or Martin Klizan for a place in round three of the competition in the Spanish capital.
