Serena Williams has booked her place in the third round of the Miami Masters with a 7-6 6-2 win over Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan.
The American survived an early scare in the first set, saving three set points to take the opener to a tie-break, which she edged 9-7.
Williams, the defending champion, settled into her stride in the second set, clinching it by a more convincing 6-2 to wrap up the match in one hour and 46 minutes.
The world number one will take on Caroline Garcia of France in the next round.
