Kyle Edmund has failed to make the main draw of the Citi Open in Washington after suffering a heavy defeat to Mischa Zverev in the opening qualifying round.
The British number three had been hoping to build on his victory at the Binghamton Challenger, but he was easily beaten by the German left-hander.
Edmund had to scrap to hold serve throughout the opening set, but a single break at the start of the match was enough for Zverev to edge into the lead.
The second set started badly for Edmund, who immediately dropped serve, and he was not able to stop the rot as Zverev raced to a 6-4 6-0 victory.
