Indian Wells 2009 champion Vera Zvonareva is through to the last 32 after grinding out an uninspiring straight-sets win over Kimiko Date-Krumm.
The world number nine was not at her best but the gulf in class between her and her plucky Japanese opponent, who is ranked 65 places below her, was all too evident.
Zvonareva settled quickly and controlled the opening set from the baseline, giving her 41-year-old 163cm opponent the runaround.
Date-Krumm temporarily threatened to spark a revival in the second set, as unforced errors and unnecessary double faults from the Russian gave her hope.
However, Zvonareva regained her composure to seal a 6-3 6-4 win.
