David Goffin has set up a third-round showdown with Kei Nishikori courtesy of a straight-sets victory over Sam Querrey at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
It was Querrey who began the match the better, forcing a break point in Goffin's opening service game before going one better to win against serve and open up a 3-1 lead.
However, the Belgian hit straight back before saving a break point on his own service game to restore parity. The crucial break came in the penultimate game of the set as Goffin moved into the lead before serving out the opener 6-4.
Both players gave less away on serve in the second set, but a mammoth seventh game proved to be pivotal as Goffin took his fifth break point to move in control of the match.
Indeed, the 13th seed had a chance to wrap up the encounter sooner than he did, but Querrey overcame two match points on his own serve before eventually falling to a fourth one game later for a 6-4 6-4 defeat.
