Daria Gavrilova has reached the third round of the Rogers Cup with a surprise win over Lucie Safarova.
The seventh seed look on course for the win after taking the opener, but she could not withstand her opponent's fightback as the Russian secured a 4-6 7-5 7-5 triumph over the seventh seed.
In the first meeting between the pair, Safarova began on the front foot, taking one of her three break-point opportunities to move into the lead against the world number 40.
However, Safarova's second serve became a target in the next set, and after only winning four points behind it throughout the second, Gavrilova was able to break three times to force a decider.
The final set would follow a similar pattern, and after four breaks were shared in the first 10 games, Gavrilova performed better during the last two games of the contest to book her place in the last 16.
