Milos Raonic has progressed to the second round of the Rogers Cup with a hard-fought three-set win over Jeremy Chardy in Montreal.
Frenchman Chardy lost the first game of the match on serve and from then on was on the back foot in the opener, which Raonic clinched with another break.
The match was then levelled at a set apiece, as Chardy broke his big-serving opponent, who is seeded 11th for the tournament, on his way to taking the second 6-4.
The second game of the deciding set summed up the tight nature of the contest, as Chardy held after the scores had been at deuce on four occasions.
Proceedings in the decider would continue to go with serve until the 12th game, when Raonic took the second of his break point opportunities to claim a 6-3 4-6 7-5 victory.
Raonic will now face Mikhail Youzhny, who beat Jurgen Melzer earlier on Monday.
