Radek Stepanek has claimed a spot in the third round of the Rogers Cup after edging out Juan Martin del Potro 6-4 7-6(5).
Stepanek secured a break of serve at the first time of asking in Toronto and managed to hold off his Argentina opponent, who clinched a bronze medal at the London Olympics following a straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic.
The Czech took a one-set lead after 50 minutes of play, leaving the sixth seed scratching his head. Del Potro tried to force through the first break of the second set but the contest continued to go by the way of serve.
It took Stepanek to claim the vital set and secure a place in the next round following a tense tie-break between the duo.
