Stanislas Wawrinka surrendered a set lead to lose to Gilles Simon in the second round of the Shanghai Masters.
The 5-7 7-5 6-4 defeat represents the second time in a fortnight that the world number four has been knocked out in the early stages of a tournament following his shock first-round loss to Tatsuma Ito at the Japan Open.
The Swiss saved two break points in the opening game on his way to winning the first set courtesy of a break in the 12th and final game.
Simon replied strongly to take a 3-1 lead in the second, but Wawrinka responded to level the scores up at 4-4 before the decisive third break of the set went the way of the Frenchman in game 11.
Again in the third Simon would claim two breaks to Wawrinka's one and he eventually served out for victory in two and a half hours after recovering from 3-0 down in the decider to win six of the next seven games.
Simon will face Malek Jaziri in the last 16 of the tournament after the Tunisian overcame Chuhan Wang.
