Marin Cilic is through to the second round of the US Open after Marcos Baghdatis was forced to retire through injury.
Cilic was one set up after taking the first 6-3 but his opponent had to withdraw four games into the second after hurting his right ankle.
The Croatian was 3-1 up in the second set before Baghdatis pulled up in New York, and the big-hitting Cilic was in full control prior to the stoppage.
Baghdatis was only granted entry into the draw after Tommy Haas was forced to pull out.
