Novak Djokovic has earned a place in the US Open final with a four-set victory over Gael Monfils.
In a bizarre match played in stifling conditions in New York, Djokovic eventually came through by a 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-2 scoreline despite undergoing treatment on both shoulders throughout the encounter.
Monfils looked lethargic at times but he twice came back strong to keep Djokovic on edge, although he could not maintain the momentum he had generated by winning six of the final seven games of the third set.
Djokovic will face Stanislas Wawrinka in the final after the Swiss overturned an early deficit to beat Kei Nishikori 4-6 7-5 6-4 6-2.
Nishikori began the contest by producing the same kind of form that had seen him outlast Andy Murray in the last eight, but Wawrinka began to overpower his opponent towards the end of the second set.
The 2014 runner-up had his moments during the second half of the match, but Wawrinka was fully deserving of a win that gives him an opportunity to try to win his third Grand Slam title after previous triumphs at the Australian Open and Roland Garros.
