World number 64 Dan Evans lost a five-set thriller to world number three Stanislas Wawrinka as the Brit bowed out in the third round of the US Open on Saturday.
Evans, who was seeking to become the fourth Briton to reach the fourth round, had match point in the fourth-set tie-break, but Wawrinka answered back before ultimately claiming the set in what was a 4-6 6-3 6-7 7-6 6-2 victory for the Swiss.
Evans matched Wawrinka point for point in the opening set and a break at 4-4 allowed the 26-year-old to serve it out against his more illustrious opponent.
Wawrinka answered back, though, as the 2015 French Open champion secured one break in the second before serving it out to level what was an even contest at 1-1.
Sets three and four both went to tie-breaks, Evans claiming the third, before Wawrinka answered back in the fourth having saved a match point with a cross-court backhand.
The third-round contest headed to a fifth with both players tiring, but it was Wawrinka that found the extra gear as he quickly moved 4-0 ahead, before ultimately serving it out to overcome the plucky Brit.
