The 33-year-old secured the first set as he managed to earn the crucial break of the Australian to take it 6-4.
Federer began to dominate the court with an array of groundstrokes, but was also strong at the net and secured another crucial break to win the second set 6-4.
Groth battled back in the third to earn a break of his own and held advantage on his service game to go 5-2 up in the set, but Federer showed his class to break back and earn a 6-4 victory.
