Angelique Kerber has moved into the world number one position in the WTA rankings after she registered a straight-sets win over Caroline Wozniacki in the last four of the US Open.
After witnessing Serena Williams lose to Karolina Pliskova, Kerber was aware that victory over her Danish opponent would see her overtake the American in the standings, but she showed little in the way of nerves on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.
Wozniacki did break the Kerber serve during the opening set but she was only able to win eight points during her return games in comparison to 19 for Kerber, who was able to break twice to move closer to the final.
The second set saw Wozniacki - who has produced some of her best form for a couple of years in Flushing Meadows en route to the semi-finals - earn a second break of serve but she was not doing enough behind her own delivery and like in the first, Kerber capitalised.
The left-handed German struck three more times to eventually wrap up a 6-4 6-3 victory in New York to reach her third Major final of 2016.
