Feliciano Lopez has reached the second round of the US Open because of Ivan Dodig's retirement this afternoon.
The duo were at the start of the fifth set when Dodig called it a day to send 19th seed Lopez through.
Lopez began poorly, losing the first set 6-1 in just 25 minutes before making a crucial break in the 12th game of the second to claim it 7-5.
Dodig was back on song in the third, winning it 6-2 and then making an early break at the start of the fourth.
However, he couldn't convert it as Lopez won four games in a row from 4-2 down to force a decider.
At 1-1 in the fifth Dodig retired and next up for Lopez in round two will be either Steve Johnson or Tatsuma Ito.
