British number one Elena Baltacha continued her preparations for next week’s US Open with a three-set victory of Julia Goerges in the second round of the Texas Open.
Goerges, ranked number three for the tournament, claimed the first set 6-2.
However, world number 61 Baltacha hit back in the two remaining sets 7-5 7-6 (7/2) to advance through to the quarter-finals.
During the match the temperature crept above 40C and Baltacha admitted that it was good groundwork for the Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows.
"It's incredibly hot here and I must admit that it's very, very hard to play in," said the 28-year-old.
"I think New York is going to seem freezing after this but that's what it's all about - making sure I go into the US Open ready for anything."
Baltacha will face Aravane Rezai or Sorana Cirstea in the next round.
