Flavia Pennetta has reached the first Grand Slam semi-final of her career with a straight-sets victory over fellow Italian Roberta Vinci at the US Open.
The world number 83, who was only put in the main draw of the tournament following the withdrawal of Yulia Putintseva, battled through the opening set 6-4.
Two early breaks saw the 31-year-old take control of the second before she closed out the contest 6-1.
Pennetta will now face either second seed Victoria Azarenka or Slovakian world number 48 Daniela Hantuchova for a place in the final.
