Roberta Vinci has emulated her quarter-final berth in last year's US Open by defeating fellow Italian Camila Giorgi in straight sets in this afternoon's last-16 match.
Unseeded Giorgi was actually the first to break and was 4-1 ahead in the opening set before losing the next five on the bounce as Vinci came through 6-4.
The 10th seed won the first eight points of the second to race 2-0 clear before Giorgi held to love to stop the run of games against her.
Giorgi was broken again in her next service game, though, and soon it was all over as Vinci served out the second 6-2.
Vinci will face either another Italian, Flavia Pennetta, or Simona Halep of Romania in the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows.
