Austria's Dominic Thiem has come from two sets down to beat Ernests Gulbis 4-6 3-6 6-4 6-3 6-3 in the second round of US open this evening.
The Latvian made a solid start, breaking his opponent, with whom he shared a coach, midway through the first set to take the lead.
It looked like it would be a comfortable evening's work for the 11th seed as he wrapped up the second in similar fashion, having not faced a single break point in the match.
However, Gulbis seemed to struggle with back pain in the third set, allowing his opponent to pull a set back.
The Latvian went off court to receive treatment before the fourth, but it did not appear to help him, while Thiem seemed to go from strength to strength to get back on level terms.
Thiem continued his momentum into the decider, opening up a 4-0 lead, before serving for the match at 5-2 up, but the pressure resulted in Gulbis getting a break back.
However, the injury continued to trouble the 11th seed as he served the next game, ensuring that Thiem wrapped up the match to set up a round-three meeting with Feliciano Lopez.
