A large tree falls on a car and narrowly avoids Wimbledon spectators outside the All England Club on Wednesday.

A large tree fell on a car outside the All England Club this morning, narrowly avoiding spectators making their way to Wimbledon.

The tree fell on a Range Rover near to the Wimbledon Park Golf Club, where thousands of spectators pass each day to enter the grounds.

"We thought it was a car crash at first but then realised it wasn't the sound of metal," PA quotes Linda Carr, from Bristol, as saying.

"We looked around to see it had just come down on top of the bonnet. It was huge.

"The driver got out, a policeman came running down and got to the passenger side. I don't know if there was a passenger or not. It was such a huge crack, an enormous noise."

All England Club officials also confirmed that a fire scare around the same time on No.1 Court was just a drill.
