Wimbledon increase prize money

Officials at Wimbledon reveal that prize money will rise by 40% ahead of this year's tournament in June.

The All England Club has confirmed that prize money at this year's Wimbledon will be up by 40%.

Players will receive a total of £22.6m at the event in June, which is up by £6.5m from the 2012 tournament.

It has also been confirmed that the winner of the men's and women's singles will be given £1.6m each.

"I think definitely for the players who are not ranked as high as the top four guys," former British number one Greg Rusedski told BBC Sport. "At the end of the day, the winner gets £1.6m but that is usually Djokovic, Nadal, Murray or Federer winning the big prizes.

"Money becomes irrelevant to those guys as it is all about winning titles. But at the lower range it is very substantial and very important because the increase makes a big difference. It allows them to pay for their coaches, travel and a physio if they have one with them on the road.

"The expenses for a player ranked between say 60 and 100 plus is quite a lot of money so I think for them the increase makes a big difference in their careers and livelihoods."

The news has come on the same day that it was confirmed that a retractable roof is to be built on court number one by 2019.
