Belinda Bencic has cruised into the second round of Wimbledon courtesy of a straight-sets victory over Tsvetana Pironkova this evening.
It took the Swiss under 80 minutes to see off her opponent, eventually coming through 6-2 6-3 to progress in routine fashion.
It was Pironkova who made the brighter start to the match, though, holding her opening service game with minimum fuss before creating four break points in the very next game.
Bencic survived that scare, and that proved to be the first of five consecutive games won by the seventh seed as she moved into control of the set.
Pironkova refused to lie down, though, and saved two set points on her way to breaking Bencic's run, but it was only a temporary reprieve as the favourite wrapped it up one game later.
Another run of four games on the bounce in the second set put Bencic on the brink of victory, but when serving for the win she failed to take advantage of three match points before Pironkova finally registered her first break of the contest.
Any hopes of a comeback were soon put to bed, however, as Bencic broke back immediately to secure the win and set up a second-round clash with American Julia Boserup.
