Florian Mayer has booked his place in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon by completing a four-sets victory over Richard Gasquet.

Gasquet was slow out of the blocks at the beginning of the match and Mayer took advantage by producing some superb tennis at times in the first set, breaking his opponent's serve on two occasions to take the opener 6-3.

The second set only survived three games on Monday evening, with rain bringing a halt to proceedings for the day and Mayer held a 2-1 lead overnight.

Despite Gasquet being gifted the opportunity to come out in better form on Tuesday, it was Mayer who once again took charge on Court Number Three. The German secured the two break points on offer in the set and quickly wrapped up a 6-1 in the second.

However, Gasquet refused to give up too easily and the 18th seed improved considerably in the third set and he was able to take the only break point opportunity that either player was given.

The Frenchman held his nerve to secure the set 6-3 and create a passage back into the match.

Gasquet's comeback was short-lived though, as Mayer secured two crucial break of serves in the fourth set to take the match 6-3 6-1 3-6 6-2.
