Petra Kvitova has gained her first round-robin win in the WTA Championships by overcoming Lucie Safarova 7-5 7-5 in the White Group in Singapore.
The two competitors could not be separated as 11 games in the first set went by way of serve.
Only one break point was created in those games, but Safarova was unable to convert it to take a 6-5 lead.
The Czech ended up ruing the missed opportunity as Kvitova broke to win the set, but Safarova bounced back to claim an early double break in the second set.
After taking a 3-0 lead, Safarova began to crumble as Kvitova nabbed a double break of her own to draw the set level on 3-3.
Three break points between them were on offer in the next two games, but neither player could convert as the set looked destined for a tie-break.
However, Kvitova was able to take a crucial break point when it mattered to win the set and wrap up the match.
