Team England's Jonny Brownlee has admitted that a lack of fitness scuppered his chances of winning a medal in the men's triathlon at the Commonwealth Games.
Brownlee was one of the favourites to top the podium alongside elder brother and defending champion Alistair, but both fell away during the final stage of the competition and ultimately finished seventh and 10th respectively.
South Africa's Henri Schoeman claimed gold after pulling away on the 5km run, and Brownlee acknowledged that he ran out of steam towards the closing stages of the race.
"I knew Henri is in good shape and to be honest with you, my first thought was 'I wish I was fit', because I would have gone with him," he told Sports Mole.
"But I couldn't go with him, so I was just thinking about the medals and thinking how I could hold on against the guys behind and when they came past I'd given it my all by then."
A downpour of rain just before the start of the men's race made conditions more difficult for the triathletes, but Brownlee conceded that he should have benefited from that.
"I just let some pressure out of my tyres and that was alright. It got cold on the pontoon and I was like 'I've done all this heat training, and it's got cold now!' but if anything that should have helped me," he added.
Jonny, who won silver behind Alistair at the Glasgow Games four years ago, is expected to be given the chance to defend his relay title when the team event takes place on Saturday.
