Volleyball chiefs concerned by lack of Team GB involvement

The president of the European Volleyball Confederation calls for urgent action to get a Team GB side competing at major events, such as Baku 2015, in the near future.

The president of the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) has revealed that top brass are working on a solution to get Great Britain competing at major events again.

Team GB's volleyball side disbanded after the 2012 Olympic Games on home soil, meaning that not one of the 160 British athletes at this year's European Games will be taking part in the sport.

CEV chief Andre Mayer believes that developing the standard of volleyball players in Britain should now be considered an urgent matter.

"[The International Volleyball Federation] would like to find a solution to keep and develop volleyball in England by giving them the opportunity, but the problem is the level of the players," he told reporters.

"The national championship is quite weak, we have to do something. Three years ago, we had an excellent top competition in London and if we see the legacy, it's not what we expected. We are discussing because for us it's a very important matter."

Government funding was cut following London 2012, with those who competed at the showpiece event for Britain going their separate ways.
