Medal favourites Serbia always represented a difficult match for the inexperienced Team GB side.
Team GB kept the game competitive early on and showed a marked improvement from their first group match, a 13-4 defeat to Romania.
Craig Figes was the team's standout performer, scoring a hat-trick to retain a sense of pride in a tough encounter.
Team GB have now lost their first two matches in Group B and will need to beat the United States on Sunday to retain any realistic chance of progressing to the knockout stages.
