Yuzuru Hanyu says that he is "proud" to have won gold for his country Japan in the men's free skating event at the Sochi Games.

Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu has said that he is "proud" to have won the men's free skating event at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi on Friday.

The 19-year-old became the second-youngest man ever to win the competition after Dick Button of the USA at the 1948 St Moritz Games in Switzerland.

"Oh my God! I'm so surprised. I can't find words," the Japan Times quotes the teenager as saying. "It was such a difficult program for me and I felt rough, physically. I'm just shocked.

"I was trying not to think about winning a gold medal, but I couldn't deflect the pressure, which was massive.

"I'm so proud of this feat as a Japanese. The Olympics is so wild and unpredictable. I've never been this nervous for a competition in my entire life."

Patrick Chan of Canada won the silver medal, while Denis Ten of Kazakhstan clinched bronze.
