Former Olympic champion Rhona Howie does not think that nerves will be a factor for David Murdoch when he skippers Team GB in the men's curling final in Sochi.

Former Olympic champion Rhona Howie has insisted that David Murdoch will not by overcome with nerves when he goes for curling gold in Sochi this afternoon.

The Scotsman will skipper Team GB's men's side when they face Canada in the final of the Winter Olympics on Friday afternoon.

Howie, who led Britain's women to the title in Salt Lake City 12 years ago to the day, is positive that Murdoch has it in him to follow her into the history books because he will not be overawed by the occasion.

"Just to go out and play his game and control what he can control," she told reporters when asked what advice she would give her compatriot. "He can't control what the Canadians do, or the crowd, or anybody else. He has to play his game.

"He came through the playoff and he is playing on February 21, which was the day I won. So it is a no-pressure day. He is a very relaxed guy. He is great at calling the game and he keeps the rest of his team calm.

"I think they will go out today and do exactly what they have done in every other game, they will keep fighting to the bitter end."

Howie is also the coach of the women's curling team, who ensured that Team GB would equal their best ever medal haul at a Winter Olympics with victory over Switzerland in the bronze medal match.
