American freeskier Maggie Voisin is out of the Sochi Games with an ankle injury she suffered while training on Friday.

Team USA's Maggie Voisin has been forced to withdraw from the women's ski slopestyle event at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The 15-year-old freeskier injured her right ankle while training on a rail feature on the slopestyle course at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park on Friday.

"Maggie distinguished herself as one of the top slopestyle athletes in the world in qualifying for Team USA," USA Today quotes Luke Bodensteiner, executive vice-president for athletics for the US Ski and Snowboard Association, as saying.

"We're disappointed for her in being unable to start but have great respect for what she accomplished to get here.

"Unfortunately there is not sufficient time to seek a replacement and have that athlete properly prepare for Tuesday's competition."

If Voisin had participated in the Sochi Games, then she would have become the USA's youngest Winter Olympic athlete since 1972.
