Sports Mole previews Friday's Championship clash between Watford and Leeds United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Returning from the international break at the top of the Championship standings, Leeds United head south to tackle Watford in Good Friday's evening battle at Vicarage Road.

The Whites ran out 2-0 victors over Millwall two weekends ago, while their hosts also emerged triumphant with a clean sheet in tow, overcoming Birmingham City by a goal to nil.

Match preview

After former manager Valerien Ismael became the latest victim of Watford's notoriously trigger-happy board, erstwhile Hornets midfielder Tom Cleverley - who only called time on his playing career at Vicarage Road last year - stepped into the dugout at St Andrew's for a date with Birmingham.

The 34-year-old's reign - however long it may last - began in perfect fashion against an out-of-sorts Blues outfit, as Emmanuel Dennis's strike on the stroke of half time propelled the Hornets to a 1-0 win, ending the four-game run without a second-tier success which spelled the end of Ismael's reign.

Owing to just their third Championship maximum since the turn of the year - all of which have interestingly come away from home - Watford reside in 13th place in the Championship table as the season draws to a close, comfortably clear of the drop zone but with little to no hope of a last-gasp playoff push.

While Birmingham, Rotherham United and Queens Park Rangers have all fallen to defeat to Watford on their own turf in 2024, item number two on Cleverley's agenda is snapping the Hornets' horrendous run of home form, which has seen the hosts go winless in six straight Vicarage Road affairs since January's FA Cup win over Chesterfield.

The home faithful have to go back even further to November 28 for their team's last Championship triumph at Vicarage Road, since when Watford have fallen to six defeats and played out three draws in front of their own fans in the second tier, despite scoring in all but one of those nine contests.

Norwich City were the most recent visiting side to fall to a league defeat at Vicarage Road, and the Canaries' former manager Daniel Farke could avenge his old club's November defeat on Good Friday, where Leeds will go in search of their fourth-straight win in the Championship.

After an FA Cup exit to Chelsea and 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town halted the momentum of a Whites side who had won their first nine Championship games of 2024, Farke's men have quickly rediscovered their ruthless ways, taking nine points from nine against Stoke City, Sheffield Wednesday and Millwall.

Wilfried Gnonto and Daniel James were the beneficiaries of Georginio Rutter's 16th and 17th assists of the league season in a 2-0 beating of the Lions, although James returns to second-tier duty after experiencing the lowest of the lows on international duty, as Wojciech Szczesny's penalty save from the Wales winger saw Poland advance to Euro 2024 at the expense of the Dragons.

Amid James's playoff pain, the Whites attacker can take a crumb of comfort from Leeds' position at the top of the table - clear of Leicester City on goal difference while boasting a one-point lead over Ipswich Town - but the Foxes' game in hand means that the Whites' title destiny is not in their own control.

Nevertheless, Farke's men have taken full advantage of Leicester's recent plight and arrive at Vicarage Road having shipped just one goal in their last six Championship away matches, while coincidentally winning their last three games against Watford without conceding once.

Team News

On account of picking up his 10th yellow card of the season in Watford's 2-1 loss to Coventry City earlier this month, defender Wesley Hoedt served the first of his two-game ban in the win over Birmingham and will complete his suspension here.

Hoedt is one of two defenders who Cleverley will definitely not be able to call upon this weekend - right-back Jeremy Ngakia is nursing a knee injury - while attacker Kwadwo Baah saw his Burton Albion loan cut short in January after picking up a hamstring problem.

Ken Sema is also out after missing the Blues beating, but Cleverley is keeping his fingers crossed that Jamal Lewis and Ryan Andrews - both of whom withdrew from international duty - will shake off their knocks in time to feature.

While James experienced a major dose of emotional pain in Wales' playoff loss to Poland, Connor Roberts was left in physical pain as he was withdrawn in the dying embers of normal time, potentially leaving Farke in a full-back pickle due to Junior Firpo's exploits with the Dominican Republic.

Firpo should arrive back in time for Friday but is a major doubt due to the quick turnaround, while Farke is sure to be without Pascal Struijk (groin), Darko Gyabi (groin) and Stuart Dallas (hip), and the visitors have also been handed an untimely blow with three other players.

Georginio Rutter may not make the cut this week due to hernia surgery, so Joel Piroe could now earn promotion to the starting lineup behind Patrick Bamford, while Gnonto (hamstring) and Ilia Gruev (ankle) need assessing too..

Watford possible starting lineup:
Bachmann; Andrews, Porteous, Pollock, Morris; Kayembe, Dele-Bashiru; Asprilla, Kone, Chakvetadze; Dennis

Leeds United possible starting lineup:
Meslier; Gray, Cooper, Rodon, Byram; Ampadu, Kamara; James, Piroe, Summerville; Bamford

We say: Watford 0-2 Leeds United

Watford would do well to target a potentially decimated left-hand side of the Leeds XI, but the hosts just cannot buy a win at Vicarage Road, and the new manager bounce should only take them so far this weekend.

With Leeds possessing the formula for clean sheets on the road during their near-impeccable start to 2024, the visitors should pick up where they left off before the international break and maintain their standing in first place, in spite of their fresh fitness issues.
