James Anderson and Chris Woakes both took two wickets each as England kept their faint hopes of winning the second Ashes Test against Australia alive.

England trailed by 413 runs at the close of day two as Shaun Marsh hit an unbeaten 126 for Australia, who racked up 442-8 with the help of Tim Paine (57) and Pat Cummins (44).

Australia were reduced to 53-4 on the third day of the second Test following the wickets gained by Anderson and Woakes, but the home side still have a lead of 268 after England were bowled out for 227.

Craig Overton added 41 not out as Trevor Bayliss's side ensured that Australia would be kept honest, and England will look to continue their comeback at the Adelaide Oval in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

England still face a seriously tough task despite their strong bowling with the pink ball, and defeat in the second Test would leave them needing to win in Perth, where they have not triumphed since 1978, to prevent Australia from lifting The Ashes.
