England outcast Kevin Pietersen accuses ECB director Andrew Strauss of being a 'hypocrite' over his comments about international cricketers playing in the IPL.

England outcast Kevin Pietersen has accused England and Wales Cricket Board director Andrew Strauss of "hypocrisy" over his recent claims that international cricketers should be allowed to play in the Indian Premier League.

Pietersen had a number of tussles with the ECB during his time in the national side, one of which was over his desire to play in the IPL, despite the tournament at times affecting the start of the domestic season on UK shores.

In a recent interview, Strauss suggested that international players could be given the green light to play in Twenty20 competitions in a bid to help the team improve when called upon for limited-overs duty with England.

On Twitter, Pietersen wrote: "I think all I should do is laugh at this! I don't know why the media let him off with this when they murdered me!

"With this decision now, the whole situation is proving to be personal! I do applaud the idea! I thought I'd just expose some hypocrisy!"

To clarify his comments, Strauss said: "I can't foresee any circumstances in which we would weaken our Test team in order to allow a player to play in the IPL or any other franchise-based competition.

"This is about striking the right balance in the long-term between red and white-ball cricket and giving players greater opportunities to improve in both formats."

Pietersen was dropped by the ECB in February last year.
