How Argentina could line up against Uruguay

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Argentina could line up for Monday's World Cup qualifier against Uruguay.

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni is not expected to make too many changes to his starting lineup for their 2022 World Cup qualifier against Uruguay on Monday.

La Albiceleste played out a goalless draw against Paraguay on Friday, failing to score for the first time in 20 international matches, however Scaloni could stick with the same attacking players at the Estadio Monumental.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi will be hoping to improve his form in front of goal, having scored only once in six matches for club and country so far this campaign; the six-time Ballon d'Or winner is also yet to find the net away from home in Qualifying.

Messi is expected to be joined in attack by Inter Milan's Joaquin Correa, who is set to lead the line, while Angel Di Maria and Alejandro Gomez could operate on the flanks.

Premier League trio Emiliano Martinez, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso all started on Friday after being given the green light to compete during October's international break, following Argentina's quarantine farce against Brazil in September. All three players could keep their places in the first XI this weekend.

Martinez will likely keep his place between the sticks ahead of Juan Musso and Franco Armani, Romero is expected to start alongside Nicolas Otamendi at centre-back, while Lo Celso could drop back into a central midfield role next to Leandro Paredes.

Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico will be hoping to force his way back into the first XI ahead of Marcos Acuna, while either Nahuel Molina or Gonzalo Montiel is set to start at right-back.

Argentina possible starting lineup: E. Martinez; Montiel, Romero, Otamendi, Acuna; Paredes, Lo Celso; Di Maria, Messi, Gomez; Correa
