Paul Lambert: "We should have been three up"

Paul Lambert says that he will not be too harsh on his Aston Villa players after missed chances during today's 2-0 defeat to Everton.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has said that Everton punished his team for wasteful finishing in their Premier League encounter at Villa Park this afternoon.

The home side had three good chances to score in the first half - including a Christian Benteke penalty saved by Tim Howard - but the Blues came on strong before half time.

Roberto Marintez's men carried that momentum into the second half, with Romelu Lukaku and Leon Osman scoring to secure all three points and leaving the Scottish coach cursing the form of Howard.

"We should have been three up, but I can't be too harsh on the lads," PA Sport quotes Lambert as saying.

"The penalty was a terrific save and the second chance Christian did the right thing in going across the keeper. He just made another great save.

"They're big moments if you don't score. Their goalkeeper had a really good game but you don't score when you're well on top and we got caught."

Villa are 13th in the table and travel to West Ham United for their next game.
