Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: 'Premier League and Bundesliga financial gap is too big'

Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says that the financial gap between the Premier League and Bundesliga has left German clubs vulnerable.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has said that it is very difficult for Bundesliga clubs to keep hold of their players due to the financial resources available in the Premier League.

English clubs spent £870m on summer transfers recently, including £161.6m on Bundesliga players.

Rummenigge feels that the financial gap between the Premier League and Bundesliga has left German clubs vulnerable to losing their players to England.

"We have an incredibly big gap between paid TV in England and paid TV in Germany," Rummenigge is quoted as saying by The Express.

"First of all, I believe we in the German league made big mistakes if we talk around 10, 12, 15 years ago when the paid TV market was established and then built and developed in England. We were very slow in believing that the clock maybe in Germany is going different than in England but it doesn't go different.

"So, that is a big, big problem in the transfer market, because the English clubs have so much money available in that market that it is not easy to defend.

"We keep our best players here in Bayern Munich like Thomas Muller or players from Real Madrid like Sergio Ramos because they have big requests from England, so it is very difficult to keep them."

Bayern Munich face FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga today.
