Lee Carsley admits that he did not feel prepared to take on the role as Brentford's permanent manager following the appointment of Dean Smith.

Lee Carsley has confessed that he did not feel ready to take a permanent manager's role at Brentford.

The Bees named Dean Smith as their new manager as the permanent successor to Marinus Dijkhuizen after Carsley admitted that he did not want the role, despite an impressive stint as interim boss.

The former Republic of Ireland midfielder has revealed that the experience has made him consider delving into management in the future.

"I just didn't think I was ready for it," Carsley told Sky Sports News. "I see myself in the development side. I like working with the younger players, from the Under-21s and down and I feel like that's a real strength.

"If anything, it's shown me that I can do it when I'm ready and maybe in four or five years, I will give it a go. Dean should be pleased with what he's seen tonight. I think there were a lot of good performances and a lot of players who are playing well and with a lot of confidence.

"I said it last week, it will be a much smoother club to come into now and I'm sure he'll be looking forward to starting work."

Brentford drew 1-1 with Bolton Wanderers in Carsley's final game in charge.
