How England could line up against Iceland

Sports Mole looks at how England could line up in Saturday's UEFA Nations League clash with Iceland.

England will be looking to make a positive start to their 2020-21 UEFA Nations League campaign when they travel to Iceland on Saturday night.

The Three Lions finished third in the 2018-19 edition of the tournament and will be eyeing three points in their opener ahead of next week's clash with Denmark.

Gareth Southgate's side have not been in action since thumping Kosovo 4-0 in their final Euro 2020 qualifier last November, which saw them finish on 21 points at the top of Group A.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how England could line up in Reykjavik.

There will certainly be an unfamiliar look to the Three Lions XI on Saturday night, with a number of players being forced to withdraw ahead of the contest for various reasons in these unprecedented times.

Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, Harry Winks and Harry Maguire are amongst the most notable absentees, while there are seven players in the squad hoping to earn their first caps.

Dean Henderson, Conor Coady, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Kalvin Phillips and Mason Greenwood could all make their debuts for the national team either against Iceland or Denmark.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez could be joined at the back by Michael Keane and Kyle Walker, although Eric Dier and Kieran Trippier will also be pushing for spots in the first XI.

Declan Rice is actually the most experienced midfielder in the squad with seven caps and could be joined by Mason Mount and Foden in a three, although James Ward-Prowse is another option.

It will be experimental from Southgate, but the front three is likely to have a familiar look with Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho expected to operate either side of captain and number one striker Harry Kane.

Nick Pope is likely to win the battle to start between the sticks, with Jordan Pickford potentially now dropping to third choice due to Dean Henderson's excellent campaign on loan at Sheffield United.
