Daniel Sturridge: "We don't want to make the numbers up"

England striker Daniel Sturridge insists that his side are going into the World Cup full of confidence after beating Peru 3-0 in their final warm-up game on home soil.

Daniel Sturridge is adamant that England aren't in the World Cup just to make up the numbers, insisting that Roy Hodgson's squad are "winners".

The 24-year-old notched the opening goal as the Three Lions eased to a 3-0 victory over Peru in their final warm-up game on home soil ahead of the tournament in Brazil.

Speaking after England's win, Sturridge told ITV Sport: "It was difficult because Peru defended well, they were very compact. We have worked very hard in the week and there wasn't the match sharpness as we would have liked. It was a hard week in training.

"Definitely, [it was my best England goal] but it's not about myself, it's about the team. It's about great preparations, putting in shift tactically, and technically to achieve everything possible.

"We don't want to make the numbers up, we are winners. That doesn't mean we will the World Cup but we are winners and we will do our best."

England face Ecuador next week as their preparation continues for their World Cup opener against Italy on June 14.
