Roberto Martinez says that Everton deserved the win over Newcastle United after Tom Cleverley's stoppage-time strike secured all three points.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that his side deserved the result after a stoppage-time strike handed them all three points at Newcastle United today.

The sides appeared to be heading for a share of the spoils after a goalless 90 minutes at St James' Park until Tom Cleverley found the net with the final kick of the game.

"We deserved that final kick in terms of getting the three points," Martinez told the club's official website. "This result is an accumulation of lessons we have learnt and that's very pleasing as a manager looking at your players wanting to take responsibility and get better.

"I felt very satisfied with the way we were performing throughout the game. In football, you have to take your chances but the way we controlled the game was very pleasing.

"I've reviewed some of the game and we had five clear-cut opportunities - to have that away from home was impressive but, more than ever, it was about getting through the period home teams always get."

The win in the North-East - Everton's first in five attempts - lifted them up to ninth in the Premier League table.
