Michael Ball: 'Everton should have sacked Roberto Martinez earlier in season'

Former Everton defender Michael Ball says that the club should have sacked manager Roberto Martinez earlier in the season.

Former Everton defender Michael Ball has questioned the timing of Roberto Martinez's sacking, suggesting that the Spaniard should have been dismissed earlier in the season.

It has been widely reported that the Merseyside club have parted company with Martinez due to growing pressure from the supporters.

In the last few games, disgruntled fans have displayed 'Martinez Out' banners, making their feelings about Everton's disappointing campaign clear.

Everton have only managed to win one game in their last eight Premier League matches, which has left them 12th in the table ahead of this Sunday's final game of the season at Goodison Park against already-relegated Norwich City.

After hearing the reports of Martinez's sacking, Ball tweeted: "Not surprising he has gone today to stop anymore embarrassment at tonight's awards evening & Sunday. But can't stopping thinking if decision was made earlier what could've been for EFC this year. Loyalty over success? Now who steps in?"

Frank de Boer is the bookmakers' favourite to take over following his departure from Ajax, but his agent has claimed that there has not yet been any contact.
