How Germany could line up against France

Sports Mole looks at how Germany could line up for Tuesday's friendly against France in Dortmund.

After the sacking of head coach Hansi Flick on Sunday, Germany are facing the peculiar situation of a manager leaving in the middle of an international break.

With Flick gone, there could still be wholesale changes to the Germany side for their friendly against France on Tuesday, not only due to the change in personnel, but because of recent performances.

That comes after a 4-1 demolition by Japan in Wolfsburg on Saturday, in which the German side were ferociously booed off the pitch by the local support.

On paper, the side picked by Flick on Saturday was about as strong as he could have gone, but many of those star names let him down once again, so many could be axed from the starting XI.

Germany's brightest talent Jamal Musiala is out injured along with one of their most reliable goalscorers at the moment, Niclas Fullkrug.

Manuel Neuer remains out after breaking his leg at the end of last year, but Marc-Andre ter Stegen was one of the very few plus points from their 4-1 thrashing at the weekend and may well have taken his place in the side permanently.

Following some questionable defensive performances in recent friendlies, David Raum, Thilo Kehrer and Matthias Ginter were all dropped by Flick for this international break.

Given the ease at which Japan cut through Germany on Saturday though, there could be more alterations again at the back by trio Rudi Voller, Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner, who are set to oversee the side here.

Leon Goretzka also lost his place, and Timo Werner was left out too, leaving Germany with no out-and-out strikers.

Kevin Schade and Kai Havertz have both been used in other positions by their Premier League clubs, and the latter had limited impact in a central role on Saturday.

Pascal Gross was given his international debut in unfavourable circumstances at the weekend, but he could be in line for his first start at this level, given his form at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Germany possible starting lineup:
Ter Stegen; Henrichs, Sule, Rudiger, Gosens; Kimmich, Gross, Gundogan, Brandt, Muller; Gnabry
