Nathaniel Clyne: 'We could have beaten Newcastle United if equaliser stood'

Nathaniel Clyne says that Liverpool could have gone on to win the game against Newcastle United had Alberto Moreno's equaliser not been ruled out.

Liverpool full-back Nathaniel Clyne has claimed that he and his teammates would have gone on to beat Newcastle United had Alberto Moreno's equaliser not been ruled out.

Jurgen Klopp's side suffered only their second defeat since the German took over in October when they succumbed to a 2-0 loss at St James' Park.

Nine minutes after Martin Skrtel scored an own goal, Moreno had the ball in the back of Newcastle's net, but he was wrongly ruled offside.

The Reds failed to strike again and Georginio Wijnaldum added to their misery by scoring the Magpies' second goal in added time.

"Newcastle - they played a good game, they made it difficult for us and we found it hard to break them down, and at the end we gave away two sloppy goals and we lost the game," Clyne told the club's official website.

"I think at the time [of Moreno's goal] it would have made it 1-1 and we were pushing. We had the upper hand and if that goal was given, we'd probably have gone on to score another one and hopefully win the game, but that didn't happen and you've just got to focus for the next game."

Liverpool are currently seventh in the Premier League table, six points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester United.
