Manchester United vs. Liverpool: Head-to-head record and past meetings

:Headline: Manchester United vs. Liverpool: Head-to-head record and past meetings:
Ahead of Sunday's FA Cup clash between Man Utd and Liverpool, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Two titans of the English game boasting 20 FA Cup titles between them clash in Sunday's tantalising quarter-final at Old Trafford, when Manchester United do battle with Liverpool.

Erik ten Hag's men earned their ticket to the last eight with wins over Wigan Athletic, Newport County and Nottingham Forest, and they strode to a 2-0 Premier League beating of Everton last weekend.

Meanwhile, the Reds have overcome Arsenal, Norwich City and Southampton to make it this far and are still on the hunt for the quadruple, having smashed Sparta Prague 11-2 over two legs in their Europa League last-16 affair.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 240
Man Utd wins: 90
Draws: 69
Liverpool wins: 81

From 240 previous showdowns between Man United and Liverpool - whose first proper fixture was a test match all the way back in 1894 - the Red Devils just about edge the head-to-head with 90 triumphs compared to 81 for the Reds, while another 69 meetings have ended level.

The most recent of those stalemates came at Anfield in December, where Man United produced a masterful defensive performance - nothing at all like their 7-0 humiliation on Merseyside last season, their heaviest Premier League loss of all time - to travel back to Old Trafford with a respectable point.

Yet to meet at the Theatre of Dreams this season - that Premier League fixture is currently scheduled for April 7 - Man United prevailed in the most recent contest on their own turf, as goals from Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho sealed a 2-1 success for Ten Hag's first win in the English top flight.

That triumph snapped a three-game losing run for Man United against Liverpool, who had previously subjected the Red Devils to 4-2 and 5-0 Old Trafford drubbings in 2021, the latter of which saw Mohamed Salah score a hat-trick to hammer another nail into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's coffin.

Prior to the 4-2 loss at the back end of the 2020-21 season, Man United had ended Liverpool's FA Cup journey in the third round with a 3-2 home success, just one of two wins that the Red Devils have to show from their last 12 meetings with the reigning EFL Cup champions in all tournaments.

Man United have followed a pattern of winning one FA Cup tie against the Reds then losing the next since 1999, but their two defeats in that time have come at Anfield, a 1-0 fifth-round reverse in 2006 before a 2-1 fourth-round beating in 2011-12.

However, the Red Devils are yet to lose an FA Cup match to Liverpool at Old Trafford and also came up trumps in the two previous finals between the two clubs in 1977 and 1996, the latter of which was settled by a long-range Eric Cantona effort.

The visitors' 10 exits to Man United is the most that they have suffered against a single opponent in the FA Cup, but more recent history is not on the hosts' side, as they could now fail to score in three straight games with Liverpool across all tournaments for the first time May 1977 - a streak which was appropriately snapped in that year's final.
